Caterpillar D6 har sitt ursprung ända tillbaka till Caterpillar diesel 35 från 1933 och var en i den trio av Caterpillars nya dieseltraktorer som introducerades under det året (de andra maskinerna var Diesel 50 och Diesel 70)
